WorldCat Resource Sharing: FirstSearch Admin Module

Use FirstSearch Administration to create and modify Constant Data, Direct Request Profiles and Custom Holdings. ALCTS would like to apologize to you if you were among the many that were unable to watch the live presentation of the “Book Repair Basics for Libraries” webinar presented earlier today. We were using a different webinar software for this event because of the need to share video. We were unaware of the access problems we would experience. The system locked up on us early in the registration process due to the large number of people that tried to access the webinar at the same time. Only 100 people were able to access the webinar, instead of the 500 that we were told could get in. Again, we do apologize for the technical problems you might have experienced.

The quality of the presentation was wonderful and we hope you will take the time to watch the recording, view the presentation file that has many useful links, and complete the evaluation form. A recording of the August 25 webinar, “What’s new with OCLC Resource Sharing Services,” is now available on the OCLC web site.

This webinar provides an overview of the following enhancements:

• New Lender String report. This report provides details about your library's interactions with specific lenders up to one year in the past.
• Custom Holdings symbol searcher. A new way to quickly identify which Custom Holdings groups contain a specific symbol (up to 10 symbols), so you can modify your custom holdings groups as needed when changes occur.
• New ILL work form fields to support article sharing. These fields provide the PubMed number (PMID) and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
• Email from anywhere. Allows your staff to send an email to another library from anywhere in an interlibrary loan workform.
• Improvements to Not Received feature. Now libraries can alert the lender that an item as not been received at any time after the lender updates the request to SHIPPED.

  The OCLC Americas Regional Council (ARC) met in New Orleans on June 24 at the start of the 2011 ALA Annual Meeting. More than 150 librarians attended in person, and even more participated virtually, to hear updates from the cooperative’s member leadership.  The meeting was followed by the OCLC Symposium on The Infinite Collection: Resources in the Digital Age.

OCLC to offer free training

OCLC will offer free, live-online and self-paced training for many courses that cover Cataloging, Resource Sharing and FirstSearch services beginning July 1, 2011.

Advances in e-learning technologies and the increased demand for online learning have allowed us to offer more training while affording greater economies of scale. This makes it possible to pass these savings on to OCLC members in the U.S. and Canada by offering free training on the services members rely on most.

In April, OCLC announced that prices remain flat for the third consecutive year, through June 2012. Adding training at no additional cost further increases savings and the value of membership in the OCLC cooperative.

We want all members to be able to take full advantage of OCLC training and learning opportunities. OCLC trainers and training partners—Amigos, WiLS, Minitex, MLNC, MCLS, OHIONET and LYRASIS—will continue to offer a wide variety of classes and learning opportunities to help members refresh or maintain skills, ensure effective use of OCLC subscription services, and learn new applications to help members leverage their investments in the cooperative.

Introduction to OCLC's Future Delivery Services

Tuesday, May 3, 11:00am EDT.

We are now in the initial phase of development for a future service that will give WorldCat Resource Sharing users a new interface that simplifies library and end-user requesting workflows through timesaving resource sharing tools. The new service, to be available from the interface that supports OCLC’s new Web-scale Management Services, will benefit interlibrary loan staff and library users in a number of ways.

• Interlibrary loan staff will manage user requests through a new easy-to-navigate interface that incorporates “buy-it” options into more traditional interlibrary loan functions. Staff will also benefit from workflow automation that will increase staff efficiency and save time.
• Library users will use familiar WorldCat.org-based services for discovery and to place requests.

Although full release of the new service will not occur until mid-2012, we want to let you know now of our plans for enhancing the resource sharing service you rely on to meet the needs of your users.
