Mobile solutions for libraries that work!

We invite you to the 6th Handheld Librarian conference, a place where interested librarians bring their tools and strategies to the learning scene. The conference will feature professional development for librarians by librarians. This is the grass-roots nature of our highly successful program. Handheld Librarian VI will build on the success of prior conferences in which an array of presenters share their experiences and insights on topics addressing themes such as ebooks, location-based social networking, lending devices, reference and mobile technologies impacting society. You can see the quality of the content by looking through our past archives.
Our exciting one day conference, February 1, will feature presentations from your peers, along with two keynotes from respected thought leaders in the library world.

Michael Stephens, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, will address the conference in the morning. His research focuses on use of emerging technologies in libraries and technology learning programs. He currently writes the monthly column “Office Hours” in Library Journal exploring issues, ideas and emerging trends in library and information science education. Stephens has spoken about emerging technologies, innovation, and libraries to audiences in over 26 states and in five countries, including a 2009 speaking/research tour of Australia.

Our afternoon keynote features Stephen Abram. Stephen has over 30 years in libraries as a practicing librarian and in the information industry. He has visited hundreds of libraries in many different countries and is uniquely positioned to spark ideas and insights. Stephen is currently Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Markets at Gale Cengage in Toronto, Canada. He has been Vice President Innovation for SirsiDynix and the Chief Strategist for the SirsiDynix Institute, VP of Corporate Development for Micromedia ProQuest, and Publisher Electronic Information for Thompson

New* Post-Conference Skill Builders Workshops – Two additional opportunities!

Ebooks, Discovery, and the Library

Publishers, authors, booksellers, and librarians have traditionally thought of discovery as something that happens in a physical place. A patron browses the shelf, a librarian offers some reader's advisory, a new author is picked up from an artfully created display. Online discovery lags behind, despite Amazon's best efforts. People still pick books up based on word of mouth. Libraries, with entire sections of staff devoted to helping people pick out books, are word of mouth engines, but struggle to prove our worth to the rest of the book ecosystem. Ebooks make that even more difficult when the library as place is taken out of the equation. This session will explore some possibilities for libraries as channels of discovery in an ebook-dominated market.

Electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) have existed for more than a decade, yet many institutions are still just beginning to work with this format. Even those with an established program can struggle with policies and workflows. What's at Stake in the HathiTrust Lawsuit

On September 12, the Authors Guild, the Australian Society of Authors, the Union Des Écrivaines et des Écrivains Québécois (UNEQ), and eight individual authors filed suit against HathiTrust, the University of Michigan, the University of California, the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, and Cornell University for copyright infringement. At issue are more than 10 million scans contained in HathiTrust's collection, as well as HathiTrust's "Orphan Works Project." The Authors Guild has argued that storing and providing access to the digital scans is illegal, while advocates for HathiTrust and participating universities argue that digitizing and providing access to the sources is critical to the future of research and scholarship.

In this web seminar, Jonathan Band, a legal consultant and frequent author on intellectual property issues, will provide an overview of the case to date, and James Grimmelmann, an associate professor at New York Law School, will discuss the legal questions on which the Authors Guild v. HathiTrust lawsuit will turn, as well as the potential implications for universities and libraries. There are reasons why the court may never reach the substantive copyright issues, and reasons why even if it does there might not be much impact on other libraries. But the case is still worth watching, Grimmelmann says, because it could significantly influence libraries' digitization and digital distribution practices.

2011 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study

Over 8,400 urban, suburban, and rural libraries participated in the 2011 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study, the largest and longest-running study of Internet connectivity in U.S. public libraries. Key findings include:

70% of libraries report increased use of public access computers, while at the same time, over 76% report an insufficient number of public computers to meet demand.
65% of libraries report that they are the only source of free public access to computers and the Internet in their communities.
67% of libraries offer access to e-books.
72% of libraries report that staff help patrons complete online job applications.
16% of libraries report decreased hours of operation. This translates to lost hours at more than 2,600 branches.

The economic downturn has forced many libraries to take a hard look at their “Big Deal” packages and reconsider whether it makes sense to continue with this type of purchasing model. Some have advocated for ending the large publisher packages as a cost-savings measure while others have argued that the vast amounts of content and the predictability of set pricing is too important to end. In this e-forum we hope to foster the debate on the pros and cons of the Big Deal in an effort to help familiarize librarians with the issues as they make their own assessments on the continuation of their publisher packages. Please join us for what we hope is a lively discussion on this current hot topic.

The advantages and disadvantages of current library Big Deal packages.
The case for maintaining a Big Deal if certain modifications or improvements can be made.

Rebecca Kemp is the E-Resources Acquisitions Librarian for University Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and she was previously the Serials Coordinator Librarian at University of North Carolina Wilmington from 2004-2009. Her current responsibilities include reviewing e-resource licenses and managing e-resource acquisitions workflows. Rebecca has served on state and national committees that provide continuing education in the field of e-resource and serials librarianship, and she has spoken at several venues, including the North Carolina Serials Conference and the American Library Association Annual Conference, about various aspects of e-resource management, including MARC record services, e-resource usage statistics, and the presentation of e-resources in online catalogs.

Rob Van Rennes is an Acquisitions Librarian at the University of Iowa where he oversees the Electronic Resources staff. He is currently serving as the chair of the ALCTS CRS Acquisitions Committee and is actively involved with the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG). Rob holds Bachelor degrees in History and German from the University of Northern Iowa and a MA in Library and Information Science from the University of Iowa.

RDA & AACR2: What's the Difference? (October 11)

RDA is the new cataloging standard developed to replace AACR2. Susan Wynne from the University of Wyoming will examine the major differences, view RDA records, discuss the status of implementation plans in U.S. libraries, and consider RDA’s possible effects on catalogers, public services, and users.

Public Libraries: Confronting the Future (October 27)

Public libraries now confront formidable challenges.  The digital transformation of all media affects our resources, services, staff and programs, while changes in users and their needs, the growth of competitive Internet services, and financial stringencies add complexity.

A range of possible responses will be presented as contrasting visions: physical vs. virtual library; individual vs. community focus; portal vs. archive service; collection vs. creative approach.

ALCTS would like to apologize to you if you were among the many that were unable to watch the live presentation of the “Book Repair Basics for Libraries” webinar presented earlier today. We were using a different webinar software for this event because of the need to share video. We were unaware of the access problems we would experience. The system locked up on us early in the registration process due to the large number of people that tried to access the webinar at the same time. Only 100 people were able to access the webinar, instead of the 500 that we were told could get in. Again, we do apologize for the technical problems you might have experienced.

New Lender String report. This report provides details about your library's interactions with specific lenders up to one year in the past.
Custom Holdings symbol searcher. A new way to quickly identify which Custom Holdings groups contain a specific symbol (up to 10 symbols), so you can modify your custom holdings groups as needed when changes occur.
New ILL work form fields to support article sharing. These fields provide the PubMed number (PMID) and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
Email from anywhere. Allows your staff to send an email to another library from anywhere in an interlibrary loan workform.
Improvements to Not Received feature. Now libraries can alert the lender that an item as not been received at any time after the lender updates the request to SHIPPED.

It has become commonplace to open discussions of technology with a nod to the ubiquity of change. Storage, network bandwidth, and computing power double every 18 months. Today's smartphones have more computing power than was onboard Apollo 11 as it hurtled toward the moon. Software gets easier to use with each release.

New online services roll out daily. Most burn brightly and fade by evening. But a few make it, sometimes with profound implications for the ways we work and interact. Security threats and their associated countermeasures proliferate at network speed. The secretary of defense recently announced that a single cyberattack allowed hackers to steal 24,000 military files. Indeed, tales to the constancy of technology-driven change are so common that we risk becoming deaf to moments of real and significant change. This is such a moment.

Information and communication technologies are currently undergoing fundamental changes that will rival the disruptions that we saw with the advent of personal computing. Three forces are driving this sea change: 1) the economics of aggregation, 2) IT consumerization, and 3) the Janus-faced role that technology plays in serving higher education’s mission. In this session, we will discuss each of these forces.

Book Repair Basics for Libraries

Description: Participants will become familiar with several types of basic repairs for bound circulating collections materials in school, public, and academic libraries. Tip-ins and basic page repairs, hinge tightening, and a variety of spine repairs will be covered. Techniques will be illustrated and demonstrated with text, images, and video. Links to other resources will be provided.

Repairs and conservation treatments on rare and special collections materials will NOT be discussed.

Audience: Individuals with little (some preferred) book repair experience will benefit. More experienced attendees will receive helpful hints.

Presenters:

Peter D. Verheyen is Head of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University. After beginning as work-study in preservation under John Dean at Johns Hopkins where he repaired and rehoused circulating collections, he studied binding and conservation in Germany and Switzerland to become a rare book conservator working in private practice and research library preservation programs. He established the conservation lab at Syracuse for the treatment of special collections materials, and developed a high-density system for storing architectural drawings. In response to a need for efficient rehousing in anticipation of off-site storage he introduced Syracuse to the shrink-wrapping of volumes. He presented Archival 101 as an ALCTS webinar during Preservation Week 2010.

Marianne Hanley is Assistant Conservator in the Department of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University Library. Her responsibilities include managing the repair and rehousing of our circulating collections, including the training of work-study students. In addition she is training in bookbinding and aspects of book conservation with conservators David Stokoe and Peter Verheyen. She also presents regularly on disaster preparedness as part of departmental staff training and outreach activities. Because Marianne has worked in both the public and private sectors of libraries, she is collaborating in the development of a basic book repair program that will benefit many different institutions and varying types of skill levels.

Libraries in a Post-Print World

What does the library without books look like? We can argue all day about whether or not printed books will eventually become obsolete. Or we can wonder how libraries and librarians will continue to serve their communities if they do. In this thought-provoking webinar, consultants Joan Frye Williams and George Needham will explore the challenges and opportunities presented by a “post-print” world.

It’s no small feat to change an existing brand, and the library brand has always been “books.” Library shelves may not be devoid of paper any time soon, but if alternative reading formats continue to be adopted at current rates, we’ll need to realign and rebrand our services or risk going the way of the dodo.

The Georgia State Copyright Case

The Georgia State University copyright infringement case has been closely watched in higher education over the last several years. This lawsuit, brought by several publishers against Georgia State University, involves the use of copyrighted materials in higher education e-reserves, but the impact of the case and its potential results may be far more reaching. The trial has now closed and is awaiting a final decision. Despite the outcome, the case will certainly have an impact on how higher education uses copyrighted materials. The case—which affects faculty, students, scholarly authors, and university services including libraries—brings up issues of fair use in a digital age, scholarly communication and publisher business models, and the broader question of the future of teaching and scholarly communication as a whole.

He will describe how mobile connectivity has changed some of the racial and ethnic composition of the online population and shrunken the digital divide. OCLC will offer free, live-online and self-paced training for many courses that cover Cataloging, Resource Sharing and FirstSearch services beginning July 1, 2011.

Advances in e-learning technologies and the increased demand for online learning have allowed us to offer more training while affording greater economies of scale. This makes it possible to pass these savings on to OCLC members in the U.S. and Canada by offering free training on the services members rely on most.

In April, OCLC announced that prices remain flat for the third consecutive year, through June 2012. Adding training at no additional cost further increases savings and the value of membership in the OCLC cooperative.

We want all members to be able to take full advantage of OCLC training and learning opportunities. OCLC trainers and training partners—Amigos, WiLS, Minitex, MLNC, MCLS, OHIONET and LYRASIS—will continue to offer a wide variety of classes and learning opportunities to help members refresh or maintain skills, ensure effective use of OCLC subscription services, and learn new applications to help members leverage their investments in the cooperative.

Introduction to OCLC's Future Delivery Services

We are now in the initial phase of development for a future service that will give WorldCat Resource Sharing users a new interface that simplifies library and end-user requesting workflows through timesaving resource sharing tools. The new service, to be available from the interface that supports OCLC’s new Web-scale Management Services, will benefit interlibrary loan staff and library users in a number of ways.

Interlibrary loan staff will manage user requests through a new easy-to-navigate interface that incorporates “buy-it” options into more traditional interlibrary loan functions. Staff will also benefit from workflow automation that will increase staff efficiency and save time.
Library users will use familiar WorldCat.org-based services for discovery and to place requests.

Although full release of the new service will not occur until mid-2012, we want to let you know now of our plans for enhancing the resource sharing service you rely on to meet the needs of your users.

Moving Faculty and Staff to Google Apps

Google Apps is a collection of web-based programs and file storage that run in a web browser. The applications include communication tools (Gmail, Google Talk, and Google Calendar), productivity tools (Google Docs: text files, spreadsheets, and presentations), a customizable start page (iGoogle), and Google Sites (to develop web pages). Google stores all of the files and content centrally and keeps a record of the different versions of a file. With Google Apps, sharing content is as simple as granting someone access, which facilitates collaboration, peer review of academic materials, and the collective generation of knowledge.

The decision to move Boise State University employees to Google Apps for Education was initially proposed within Boise State's Office of Information Technology in 2008. We saw an opportunity to extract ourselves from the business of administering an e-mail system, allowing us to focus on other projects and activities and provide a higher value to our institution. Not only was this the opportunity to advance from an e-mail system to a collaboration platform; the move enabled us to more closely align our IT organization with Boise State University's strategic plan.

Although you may not think it, digital preservation touches all areas of library services. Incorporating this ever-expanding area of responsibility leads to challenges in resource management, as well as change management. But what is digital preservation and why do library staff from acquisitions to reference need to care? This e-forum will explore how digital preservation impacts each department, and will ask participants to discuss what policy and technology steps their library has taken to steward digital objects over time.

Questions:

How do you define digital preservation? Does that definition differ in other units of your library, especially IT departments, administration, and public services? How can you bridge that gap between what you know to be true and what others think to be true?
Digital preservation is a relative newcomer to library's responsibilities. Are your libraries addressing it? How? To what extent is their commitment? Think resources (people, funding, space, technology), buy-in (passing phase or programmatic change), administration (change is happening at the top or the bottom or somewhere in between)? Can you think of other areas where commitment is needed? If your institution is not committed to DP, any ideas for how to get commitment?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. Very few educators have thus far used Wikipedia as a teaching tool in their classrooms, but this is beginning to change due to the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. The Wikimedia Foundation launched the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative in fall 2010 in order to find new ways to incorporate Wikipedia into higher education environments. In the fall 2010 semester, 13 classes from 10 universities participated by developing various assignments that incorporated Wikipedia editing as a main component, with many more signing up for the second iteration in spring 2011.

In these classes, professors and trained ambassadors worked together to develop assignments that achieved the learning goals of the professor while contributing to the development of new content on the free encyclopedia. Though the first classes to receive ambassadors focus on developing mainly public policy–oriented pages, one of the program's end goals is to develop a model that can be expanded to other disciplines.

Blending Traditional and Online Learning

Today, the blending of traditional classroom instruction with online learning is bridging the achievement gap and marking the biggest single shift in public education in more than 100 years. Innovative public schools are opting for blended or hybrid classroom environments, with 70% of learning taking place in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting and the remaining 30% of learning happening online. Launching a Netbook (Mobile Learning) Program

This webinar features one school district’s story of launching a Netbook program. Lake Tahoe Unified School District embarked on a journey in 2009 to capitalize on smaller, low cost Netbooks to increase student engagement and save money on textbooks. The district began with a pilot program and almost immediately noticed improved classroom results as a result of greater student engagement. The district plans to expand the program, as a result, by putting a Netbook in hands of every student in grades 3 – 12 by the end of 2012. With many libraries facing budget cuts and looking for more efficient ways to manage services, the option of floating collections has entered the spotlight again. Once considered a radical approach to collection management, floating a few or perhaps all of a library’s collections is becoming more mainstream than revolutionary. What are the benefits of this model and how does it impact patrons, library collection development, and library staff? If you are just curious, considering moving toward this model, or about to flip the switch and set your collection free, you’re bound to find useful information for your floating toolkit in this discussion.

What is an e-forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Cindy has been using open source software for over 10 years, which has allowed the library to save licensing costs and have more control over its computing environment. The library uses open source tools for their websites, e-mail, Internet firewall, wireless router, proxying, filtering, and productivity software. They use thin clients for Internet access and Koha for the circulation and public catalogs.
